Windows 8.1

Build 9600 (Windows 8.1)

Poor ol' Windows 8.1

I never got any new icons, maybe that's why people don't like me :(

Threshold Wave 1

Build 9841

Welcome, Insiders!

The first Windows Insider build, released October 1st, 2014, introduced the first couple of new icons, mostly aimed at Explorer. 9841 includes new icons for Explorer, the desktop, This PC, Networks and more...

Build 9879

Before it all went wrong...

Build 9879 changes the folder icons.

Build 9926

The flashy update

Build 9926 was the first build to introduce major icon changes, 41 icons were changed, replacing most that were updated in 9841 and 9879. This build continues the flat icons trend started in 9841, but uses much brighter colours than any previous build, the Explorer icon and folder icons, for example are pretty much the same as in 9841/9879, just brighter. This build also changes the taskbar sound icons and adds some new taskbar icons like the geolocation and action center icons.

Build 10041

The one for your tape recorder

This build continues the design vision of 9926, it replaces most special folder and storage media icons like harddrives and DVDs, but also floppy disks and tape recorders.
Oh, and it has that recycle bin icon everyone lost their mind over.

Build 10049

UI changes

This build only introduces 4 changes, all UI elements.

Build 10061

A small step for icons, but a giant leap for iconkind

This build only has 4 icon updates, but they're the first hints of the new direction Microsoft is taking with their icons: isometric, with softer colours.
After a massive outcry from the Insider community, Microsoft updated the recycle bin icons, they're isometric now and include some transparency.

Build 10074

The networking update

Build 10074 changed 96 networking icons, for both the dark and light theme.

Build 10122

The calm before the storm

This build changes some networking icons in the BootUX and some taskbar icons like the clock, battery, action center etc.

Build 10130

The big one

This build is the one you've all been waiting for, it added a whopping 349 new icons. Gone are the flat, brightly coloured icons, build 10130 introduces new isometric icons for a big chunk of Windows 8.1's icons.

Build 10158

Final polishes

This build adds some new icons, but mostly polishes the 10130 ones, take the diskette drive icon, for example, it now has an actual diskette slot in the drive itself. Some of the new icons can be found in the Control Panel.

Threshold Wave 2 (November Update)

Build 10532

The first devices update

This build updates the Device Manager icon, most of the devices icons in DDOres.dll and setupapi.dll, this includes sound recording/playback devices, displays, network devices, sensors, storage devices, ...

Build 10547

The PowerUpdate

Some miscellaneous icon updates, noteworthy icons to be updated include the Window border color picker and the PowerShell and PowerShell ISE icons.
Interestingly, this build briefly introduces light blue, monochrome icons for the Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool, these three icons will be changed to match the rest of the system in build 10565.

Build 10565

The second devices update

The second wave of device icon updates brings changes to local network devices, sound devices, sensors, the modem UI and Disk Management among other minor tweaks. Almost all icons across the entire OS are now updated to match Windows 10's style.

Redstone Wave 1 (Anniversary Update)

Build 14291

Safely remove icons

The first icon update in Redstone: the hotplug icon AKA the "safely remove device" icon AKA the one you never use.

Build 14316

The mystery update

Build 14316 adds 6 new icons to imageres.dll, The purpose of these new icons is not clear yet, some suggest they look like Skype things (highly unlikely), others suggest they are badges for files synced to the cloud.

Build 14328

Ruined a perfectly good icon

Somehow someone at Microsoft thought it would be a good idea to change the Explorer icon...
The enterprise mode icon was changed to a briefcase, some new icons were added for new features like Windows Ink introduced in this build.

Build 14342

Windows Live Inking

As mentioned in Gabe's blogpost, "[Microsoft] updated the Windows Ink Workspace icon on the taskbar. The new icon shows a more expressive ink stroke and is more consistent with other icons in the notification area. The new icon also looks better at wider range of sizes."
It also looks a lot like the old Windows Live Writer icon.
The Defender icon was also updated to match the flat, blue/white look of the rest of the system icons.

Build 14352

Viva La Revolución!

After a bunch of negative feedback from Insiders, the (almost) monochrome File Explorer icon introduced in 14328 was changed to be more colourful again. The new icon is basically the same as the pre-14328 one minus the shadow and (subtle) gradient.

Build 14361

Lingering icons

According to the announcement the Blu-Ray drive icon was changed. Interestingly enough the icon shown in the blogpost was identical to the old one in DDORes.dll (introduced in build 10532). But according to some Twitter users build 14352 used to display an old Windows 7/8 style icon.
There were indeed some old drive icons lingering around in imagesp1.dll. It's that Blu-Ray icon that got changed to the new one. The other 7 icons in imagesp1.dll, however, did not get updated, perhaps because they are used for arguably obsolete formats such as HD-DVD.
Some outdated Hyper-V icons were also updated.

Build 14366

Some new Enterprise Mode icons got added, including a greyed-out version of the briefcase and ecrypt icons that were added in build 14328. The (full-colour) decrypt icon went from grey with a blue acccent to full blue.
The Ink Workspace icon got updated with a bigger version of the same design.

Redstone Wave 2 (Creators Update)

Build 14905

A single new icon was added to devmgr.dll.

Build 14931

Remote Assistance

Msra.exe, the built-in Remote Assistance tool finally had all of its icons updated to match the modern design language.

Build 14936

Cloud sync update

4 of the cloud sync icons introduced in Build 14316 were updated, some with minor changes, others got a complete redesign.

Build 14971

More sync changes

More changes for the OneDrive On-demand Sync icons: 3 of them got completely redesigned, 2 more were switched to a blank icon and imageres_1406 was deleted completely.

Build 14985

A customer display for cash registers was added to the already existing icons for cash registers, barcode scanners and ticket printers from build 10532.
A trackpad icon was added to the taskbar assets.

Build 15002

The first release of 2017 adds new icons for the revamped Windows Update and Defender experiences. New volume icons to indicate support for spatial audio were also added.

Build 15007

VR Headsets & WSHA

A new icon was added to setupapi.dll to add support for plug and play VR Headsets. A new icon was added for WSHA to reflect the new style of the Defender icon.

Build 15014

Snipping Tool

The Snipping Tool icon was finally updated to match Windows 10's icon style.

Build 15025

VR headsets (again)

The VR headset icon that was added to setupapi.dll in 15007 was also added to DDORes.dll in this build.

Build 15042

Security fixes

A bunch of Defender icons were added to SecurityHealthSSO.dll.

Build 15046

It's not all bad news

The Defender icons that were added in 15042 didn't include an icon variant with a green checkmark, it does now.
